Review – Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick.

Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick

book blurb

Becca Fitzpatrick is the internationally bestselling author of the paranormal Hush, Hush series. Her new standalone novel, Black Ice, is a psychological thriller but still contains all of the key ingredients that her fans love: romance and tension.

Britt Pfeiffer has never been that adventurous, but that’s about to change. Wanting to impress her ex-boyfriend, Britt convinces best friend, Korbie, to take a trekking trip with her. But when a freak storm leaves the girls stranded they seek shelter in a cabin, where they find two knights in shining armour. Or so they think.  Britt quickly realises that the girls need to get off the mountain, fast. In exchange for her life, she is forced to guide the boys down, and as they set out on a harrowing journey through the cold and snow, Britt realises the only way to escape with her life is to pretend she is on their side. But is gorgeous, sexy Mason an enemy or an ally? Tension mounts, and it’s only a matter of time before things turn deadly . . .  Dark and adrenaline-filled, Black Ice will have you on the edge of your seat right until the final twist.

review by nicola

This is the first book i have read by Becca Fitzpatrick and i have to say i was addicted from the start.

Im one of those readers that has to read to the end of a chapter before putting it down and with this book i DIDN’T want to put it down… all!

What drew me to this book was the cover. It has a dark eerie look to it which is very fitting to the book, It also has action, murder, abduction with a sprinkling of passion thrown in for good measure.

We all have that one book character that we can relate to and for me it was Britt. I depend on the men in my life just like her but when faced with certain things that i have to do alone i can be as brave as the next person and for this i really admired Britt, though im not sure i could put up with her so called best friend, Korbie. I felt like she was always bringing Britt down, no matter how hard she tried it wasn’t good enough for her and that really grated on me.

The action really picked up once Sean and Mason were introduced into the book, these were the times that the book didn’t leave my side. The way Britt and Mason bounced off of each other was just right….one minute mad at each other the next practically saving each others life. And as twisted as Sean was i rather enjoyed his character, he seemed to argue with himself a lot .

The only question i was left with, where did Bear go?!

Without giving too much away this book really is a good read,  Its entertaining to the very end and i look forward to my next read from Becca Fitzpatrick!

review by nicola

If i told you i had just finished reading Vessel by John Bowen you may ask “Who?” Well etch that name into your mind because i can see him becoming VERY popular!

Vessel is the first book i have read of John’s but definitely wont be the last, that’s for sure.

An action packed read from the get go (could even see it as a movie and would certainly challenge the likes of Robert Langdon and Jason Bourne….sorry to compare BUT if this happens i require premier tickets)

The lead characters, Holly and Gabe are practically thrown into a life on the run with a mysterious object in a box that everyone seems to want/need. Trust no one is the game so when offered help from Jin the couple are reluctant but after saving each others life on more than one occasion its better the devil you know.

John how do you do it? I have a baby so sleep is a must at the minute…..until i opened your book! Sleep when im dead right?!
This book was definitely worth the sleep loss and id happily do it again!

Gripped from the start and so not what i was expecting at all. This book has it all……
Action, from the start until the finish its go, go, GO! Car chases, explosions, guts, gore, the lot!!
Conspiracy, loved this part, getting to know the secrets that make you ohhh, ahhh and oh no they didn’t!!
Twists & turns, too many to count but bigger is better in my book 🙂 and a background story that i absolutely loved!

The story kept me on my toes constantly and left me wanting more, and there better be more! I’m the kind of reader that stops reading at the end of a chapter but this book left me saying, oh just one more chapter….which led on to another and another and another! Only criticism i have, i like the original cover best, sorry!

Definitely a book that i WILL be recommending over and over again…..Remember the little people when you become a #1 best seller John 😉

Marquel’s Dilemma

A Romantic Thriller
(Includes Adult Content)

By Emily W. Skinner

Marquels Dilemma

WLK synopsis

SPOILER ALERT – To avoid spoilers, it is advised to read the first novel, Marquel, before reading Marquel’s Dilemma.

Marquel’s Dilemma

The dramatic conclusion of Emily Skinner’s first novel Marquel brought requests from readers to continue the story.
Marquel’s Dilemma begins three years after the actress Marquel’s tragic past has been exposed by tabloid journalist, Mark Collins. The media exploitation of her life brought a new responsibility. She would become a voice of hope for others, not as the actress Marquel, but under her married name.

Zach Manning, Marquel’s psychiatrist, lover — and now husband — made a huge mistake in protecting her. Unbeknownst to his wife, Zach asked for a favor, not weighing the consequences. Now Collins is back for revenge. The first time it was his job… now it’s personal!

WLK excerpt

The unvarnished truth was that Zach was a lonely, middle-aged, divorced psychiatrist when “Marquel” entered his life. Their sessions had been a mix of tears, anger, darkness and sexual tension. Loving her was the biggest risk he had taken since opening a practice in Beverly Hills. He understood the consequences, but broke his professional ethics for a second chance at love.

He was mesmerized by her. Rumors of a nervous breakdown were just surfacing in the gossip magazines and it was his job to keep her functioning. It was a constant struggle, trying to keep up with the demons that were haunting her.

The car door opened and her gorgeous smile sent his heart racing, as it always did. Its appearance had been so rare in their early days.

“Did you have a good session?” He could see her eyes were red.

She picked up the flowers and kissed him sweetly on the mouth. “You always do the right thing.”

He pulled her in for another kiss, this one lingering.

“I don’t know what I’d do without you,” her finger circled his mouth and she gave him another light kiss before buckling her seat belt. “You make everything right with the world.”

He never felt this way with Isabel. His ex never had the look of love in her eyes when she spoke to him. This was the happiest he’d ever been with a woman.

WLK Author Bio

Emily W. Skinner

Emily had a goal when she was 15, she would have a daughter named Marquel and write a novel titled “Marquel.” She accomplished both and more.
A member of The International Thriller Writers, Emily was a protege of the late master of the pulps or paperback originals, Harry Whittington. Emily interviewed Whittington during her days as a feature writer for the Clearwater Sun daily newspaper and its weekly division. They became friends and he taught her how to plot and gave her approval of the original outline and sample chapter for “Marquel” shortly before he died in 1989.
After Whittington passed away, Emily challenged herself to write as her mentor did and wrote a chapter a day and finished the novel “Marquel” in 52 days. For more details on the novel’s history read:…
Fast forward, a second daughter, Blair is born and Emily and husband Tom focus on raising their family. Both daughters are now grown and work in Hollywood. So this might be an example of art imitating life or the reverse?
A devoted Catholic, Emily is rekindling her love for writing and has just completed the movie script for “Marquel” and a young adult paranormal appropriately named after her youngest child, “St. Blair: Children of the Night.” She will begin the sequel to “Marquel” in the coming months, currently untitled.
When Emily isn’t working as a marketing consultant or writing, she enjoys antiquing/thrifting and producing short films. Emily is the proud Executive Producer of Blair Skinner’s film “Relative Eternity,” a 2012 LA Shorts Film Festival selection, Sunscreen Film Festival selection and Short Film Corner Festival de Cannes selection. Kelly Jamieson – Loving Maddie A To Z ~ Promo

Kelly Jamieson
Loving Maddie From A To Z

Loving MaddieBlurb:

Award-winning photojournalist Zack Donovan is happy to be alive after being held captive by a band of rebels in Syria. He’s not so happy to be on his way back to Chicago to recuperate with his college friends Maddie and Aidan, who are now a couple. The fear while being held prisoner was nothing compared to how he feels about facing the two people who unknowingly broke his heart seven years ago.

Maddie and Aidan are deeply in love, but lately they feel something is missing for them. They’d do anything to make the other happy, but are struggling to figure out what that is. Those problems are set aside, however, when their best friend from college is taken hostage in Syria. After graduation, Maddie and Aidan were hurt by Zack’s refusal to ever come home to visit, but he’s still their friend and he has no family, so when he’s finally free they insist he come stay with them to recover.

Zack’s a different man now. He’s seen terrible things. He’s come to terms with his sexuality and embraced his need to dominate. Maddie and Aidan would be shocked to know the kinds of things he likes to do. A guy like him will never have a relationship like theirs. But when Zack realizes he might be able to show Maddie and Aidan what they’re missing, he faces a dilemma. Do something? Do nothing? Pretend everything’s fine? Help them if he can? But will showing them what they’re missing help save their relationship…or destroy it?

Zack stared out the window of the Boeing 777 as the wheels touched down at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.

He was about to see Maddie and Aidan again.

That should have filled him with dread. He’d been avoiding them for seven years. Now…he didn’t feel anything. After what he’d been through, he’d shut down. Over-the-top emotions had no place in his life. Hopes got crushed, fears got mocked. Hate made you bitter and love made you weak. He was just lucky to be alive. After the things he’d endured, seeing his two old friends, the ones he’d run from with a broken heart and never looked back, was really no big deal.

Broken heart. He almost snorted out loud. Looking back now at his youthful misery, it seemed so…over the top. Whatever.

Not that he was all eager to see them. He just…had nowhere else to go.

Sure he did. There were a lot of places he could go. There was a whole world out there. He could go visit Kate in London, hanging out in her elegant flat. He could go see Jean-Marc in Paris and have some fun in the dungeon he’d introduced Zack to.

He couldn’t go there. Who was he kidding? He was a mess. He’d lost so much weight his skin was hanging on his bones. He was having nightmares and flashbacks. Neither Kate nor Jean-Marc had offered him a place to stay.
Maddie and Aidan had.

Maddie’s emails pleading that he should come to them when he’d finally been released from hospital in Germany must have caught him at a weak moment. He found himself agreeing to come to Chicago and stay with them while he recovered. He couldn’t imagine showing up at Kate’s place in this kind of shape. She was a lovely woman, but probably not strong enough to deal with his shit. Jean-Marc…same thing.

He didn’t want to do this to Aidan and Maddie either, but somehow he knew they were solid and strong enough to deal with this.

His employer had made it quite clear that he wasn’t going to be working for a while. Six weeks of leave to “recuperate.”

But they didn’t understand—he was fine. Well mostly.

And what was he going to do for a six weeks? Jesus. If he wasn’t already whacked, he’d be really out of his mind after sitting around doing nothing for that long.

The plane took forever to taxi to the terminal, then even longer to open the door and let people deplane. By the time he was able to rise from his seat, grab his bag from the overhead compartment and file off the plane, he was antsy and itchy. Maddie had insisted they’d pick him up at the airport. Were they waiting for him just inside this building? Was he going to be able to handle seeing them together…seeing them as lovers, not just friends? Were they going to freak out seeing him like this, after all this time?

Somehow they’d kept his return under the radar. The media had been all over the story, a happy ending story this time compared to some recent events. He’d given a ton of interviews in Germany. He knew they wanted to cover it, the homecoming, the guy who’d survived—but he couldn’t handle that. He wanted to tell the stories—he didn’t want to be the story. He knew at some point he was going to have to face the press once home, ha, even though he was one of them. He just couldn’t do it right now.

So the State Department and Stockton had managed to keep all the plans on the down low, as had Aidan and Maddie.

He rubbed his face as he emerged into the terminal. He tugged a newsboy cap down over his eyes and kept his sunglasses on even in the terminal, in case someone recognized him. As if he was a fucking movie star, or something. He hated the media attention.

He followed the swarm of people toward the baggage claim, his insides tightening up. Everything turned to a blur around him as he tried not to look for familiar faces in the crowd, all the noise around him becoming a muted roar. He focused on finding the carousel displaying his flight number, shoving his hands into the pockets of his new jeans.

For some reason he didn’t want to see them first.

He heard her voice behind him and stopped. His shoulders tightened, but he turned.

Something inside him clamped down on his heart, squeezing it. He looked at Maddie nearly running at him, fuck, so gorgeous it made his throat ache. Her shiny brown hair was still long and straight, hanging below her shoulders. She used to wear her bangs thick and straight across her forehead, but now they were swept to one side. Her smile was as sweet as ever, her cheeks pink, her sapphire eyes shiny. Behind her was Aidan, striding fast, an intense look on his face. Aidan hadn’t changed at all.

Maddie barreled at him, long legs bare in a pair of cut off denim shorts, flat sandals, a loose flowery top in pale grey with pink flowers flowing around her slender torso, tiny straps leaving arms and shoulders bare. Then she was nearly knocking him off balance, her arms going around his waist, her face planted in his chest.

His lungs burned and his throat closed up. His arms closed around her helplessly and he squeezed his eyes shut against the stinging he felt. Fuck. Fuck! He did not want to feel these things. He’d been dealing fine with all his crap, mostly by shutting down. But now he was suddenly terrified he was going to burst into tears.

About Krissy V

I am a mother to two young children, who in turn keep me young. I live in Dublin, Ireland but, I’m originally from South Devon in the UK. I work full time in a pharmacy and write in all my spare time: in my lunch hour, when watching TV at night and anywhere. I have always been interested in reading from a young age and then 2 years ago I was given a kindle as a present and it was the best thing that happened to me. I was able to read lots of books ever week and then I started to write reviews for all the books I read. I took this one step further and started my own facebook page – Sparkling Pink Bookshelf. I intended to upload all of my reviews for the books I read. This was purely for pleasure and then I answered a post on Facebook for someone to read for reviews and thought I had died and gone to heaven. I was reading about 7/8 books a week, the kindle made this achievable. I would read at any opportunity I could, even staying up til the small hours to finish a book. I loved it. Then one day I was asked to beta read a book – I loved this side of it, it was so exciting. I have worked with a number of indie authors and have remained loyal to a few select authors and I beta read all their After a year or more of doing this, I thought maybe I could write some of the stories that were in my head and I just decided to write and see what happened. I wrote about 70% of a story and then saw a post for the NaNoWriMo competition – to write 50,000 words in 30 days, I decided that this was a challenge I wanted to take and the Til Death Us Do Part series was born.

I am always thinking of situations that can be turned into a story and have started a few stories, which in turn will be completed and released to my readers. I love to hear what my readers have to say about my work and please find my links below.

Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy this series of books as much as I enjoyed writing them.
